This is the training session that turned into the real thing

Training was a communication and navigation exercise using both vessels and a SAR team in the main base with the main focus being good and clear communications following on from the SAR communications theory module which was run the week before.

Halfway through the exercise a Pan Pan was received from Maritime time radio for a possible flare sighting. This was quickly followed by another possible sighting shortly after. Both vessels and the SAR team quickly changed to full operational mode and the protector was tasked to start a search.

After an operation that involved NZ Police and two separate Coastguard units it became apparent the flares was in fact meteoroid shower. The boats were then stood down
