New volunteer earns her place on the crew

Congratulations to our newest recruit, Rachel Russell. Rachel has shown a lot of dedication to complete the induction phase of her Coastguard CRV Crew training to become a Trainee crew member. In fact, she has already attended a number of the training sessions that put her on track to achieve Operational status at which point she will be awarded an Operational Certificate. Read on for more details.

Below is the training matrix that all Coastguard CRV (Coastguard Rescue Vessel) crew are put through, at their own pace, when they volunteer their time to the Unit.

-Safe Ships Management
-Manual (Local Unit)
Legal considerations SAR Comms
Towing
Observation Tech
Victim Recovery
Man overboard
Operational Certificate
Operational phase
On completion will be awarded a Senior Cert. -Boatmaster
-Radar
-Inboard Maint.
or (depending on type of CRV engine)
-Outboard Maint.
-GPS
-75 actual hours on a CRV
-Search Techniques
-Emergency Repairs
-Working with Aircraft
-Boat Handling & Heavy Weather
-On-Scene Command
Senior Certificate
Senior phase
On completion will be awarded a Master Cert. -Satisfies local Unit criteria
-150 actual sea time hours including min sea time required on a CRV (75 hours on a CRV with a min of 20 hours SAROP/SAREX Day & 10 hours SAREX/SAROP Night)

Master Certificate
Master phase
On gaining required additional experience, will be awarded a Senior Master endorsement. -Satisfies local Unit criteria
-300 hours on a CRV with a min of 100 hours In Command SAROP/SAREX Day, & 50 hours In Command SAROP/SAREX Night
  Senior Master Endorsement
* If a Boatmaster course is completed instead, then Day Skipper is not required for award of Operational Certificate
